ACCC aid for small business |
03/11/2005 - The stepped up focus of action on behalf of small business by the
Australian Competition and Consumer Commission is highlighted in the latest
ACCC publication Small Business Report: New deal - fair deal.
"Last year the Federal Government issued a program for small business, New
Deal, Fair Deal which included legislation to strengthen protection
available to small business," Acting ACCC Chairman, Mr Allan Asher, said
today.
"The ACCC has a major role to play in this program and this publication
helps small business to identify when and where we can help.
"The ACCC believes that one of the biggest problems facing small business
is not knowing clearly its rights and obligations. A major part of the New
Deal, Fair Deal work will be to properly inform small business of these
rights and obligations.
"Under the program the ACCC will be involved with enforcing proposed
strengthened unconscionable conduct provisions of the Trade Practices Act,
it's new Code of Conduct Enforcement Unit will act against prescribed code
breaches, encourage greater and better use of compliance programs, run
'test' cases in small business oriented trade practices law and help
develop alternative dispute resolution processes.
"Small business enforcement and policy work at the ACCC will be
strengthened by the early appointment of two small business Associate
Commissioners and the later appointment of a full time Commissioner with
small business experience.
"The ACCC's own Small Business Unit will also be expanded to be fully
represented nationally."
Mr Asher said thousands of copies of the report would be distributed
through the auspices of the ACCC's Small Business Advisory Group which
represents the major small business organisations.
"Copies will be available also from all ACCC offices in each capital,
Townsville and Tamworth." |
